The origins of how and why we celebrate Valentine’s day is still unclear. There are several explanations of how we all came to celebrate V-day ranging from a celebratory feast in the name of past patron Saints to pagan traditions celebrating fertility.

Regardless of how it started, today the word “Valentines” is synonymous with love, romance, chocolate and flowers.

Some may even think that it is nothing but a marketing ploy that Corporations all over the world capitalize on to make more money from hopeless romantic consumers. These days I tend to agree with the latter (hmmm jaded much?? LOL).

I remember even when I was in a relationship, I dreaded it. There was just so much pressure to please, on the one day of the year when in reality if you love someone and in a relationship, there shouldn’t be just one day of the year to show them you care.

On the flip side, it is also a bit awkward when you are the only female (let alone 40 and single) that didn’t receive a bunch of flowers delivered to your desk in the office.

In the true spirit of romance and love, Valentine’s should be celebrated – even if you are single. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating love for oneself, so here are a few fun things to do on Valentine’s day – solo that would make any couple jealous.

1) Travel

What better way to avoid a sappy holiday like Valentine’s Day than to be solo in another city or even another country. Sure, you’re probably going to see starry-eyed couples in love and getting high off each other’s pheromones but at least you’ll be in a different environment.

If we’re lucky enough for Valentine’s day to fall on the Friday right before a more legitimate and recognized holiday like Presidents day (like it did this year) book a trip to somewhere fun and in the sun.

The Caribbean is only a 3-4 hour flight and you can get great weekend deals. If you can’t escape the mushiness of V-day, then at least you will be in the sunshine on a beautiful beach, getting away from the winter.

2) Girls night out

Gurrrrrrl!!!!

What more do I have to say? This is the perfect day or night to gather all your single girls/guys and organize a night of fun together. Whether it’s hosting a lively dinner at home or a night out on the town, living in New York there are so many options and places that cater to the single crowd, especially on Valentine’s day.

It’s that one night of the year to let your hair down, laugh, cry, eat, drink and dance the night away (well at least this time there is a particular reason!). Painting the town red on the special V-day has never been more appropriate.

3) Work on your dating game

What might also be on the single person’s agenda is dedicating time to work on your dating game. Why not brush up those social flirting skills at a local speed dating event? In a city like New York, there’s no shortage of connecting with a bevy of eligible bachelors or bachelorettes.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to finally finish your online dating profile that’s been on your to-do list since last Valentine’s day (how are you ever going to get a date with a blurred selfie and 2 exclamation marks in your profile description…..and you wonder why you’re single???) LOL!

I get it.

It’s excruciating trying to complete a dating profile. Sure, it may feel a little dirty to essentially sell yourself to strangers but it ain’t going to finish itself! Have fun with it!

Be creative, be flirty and witty but most importantly be yourself (and be safe)! With so many dating sites and apps out there to cater for almost every niche and fetish, you may very well just find your Prince Charming or Miss Right!

4) Get a jump start on Spring cleaning

With Spring just around the corner, it can pay to be productive on a day when folks are usually too busy making googly-eyes at each other. Get on the front foot on Spring cleaning.

Start culling and donating those clothes that you haven’t worn for a year but still have the tags on them. Ditto with the old shoes you no longer wear, taking up space in your tiny New York apartment studio.

Clearing clutter and making room for new energy can be therapeutic and good Feng Shui. Knowing that you are “getting rid of the old to make room for the new” is a great start to the Spring!

5) Self-care (aka spoil yourself)

You probably don’t do this often as you should. Self-care, people! It is a thing now.

Life can get busy and before you know it,? you’re stuck in your routine and don’t make time for yourself as you should. Assigning a date in the calendar, just for love – gives you all the more reason to care for yourself better.

Self-care can mean anything that will put you in a good mood, feel relaxed and refreshed.

From mani/pedi’s, a luxurious facial or an indulging massage – to taking a walk in the park, unplugged and off the grid, going to that boxing or yoga class that is usually too full to attend (but since everyone is doing V-Day stuff there’s way more room) or just taking a soothing, aromatherapy infused bubble bath.

Whatever it may be, make solo V-Day all about the one you should love more, yourself!

  1. It doesn’t much sound like Valentine’s Day to do spring cleaning, especially in February. However, if I could send you a picture of my apartment, you’d be glad you suggested it. My son just moved in with me, so there has been a lot of rearranging and we have stuff scattered in odd places all over the place.

I have a little collection of essential and carrier oils, though. When I figure out where to put the huge box of sheets that is currently in the middle of the kitchen, I think it’ll be time to soak in an argan oil bath. You did suggest spoiling ourselves. 😉

    1. Ha! I know….I was reaching with Spring cleaning and Valentine’s day….:)

Gurrrrrrl you just do you! Whatever makes you feel good! I know I almost forgot it was V-Day today! 🙂

Thank you for stopping by and wish you all the best 🙂

I like your idea of getting a jump start on spring cleaning. I think about this for a while now. With Spring just around the corner. It is good idea to clean the stuff and donate not needed stuff to charity. Clearing clutter and making room for new stuff, which bring new energy to my life.

I agree with you: getting rid of the old to make room for the new. It is kind of you sharing so much useful information with us.

  3. I really like your approach with dealing with vday solo. it can be a little lonely, and with a bit of tongue and cheek humor, people can learn not to take themselves so easily, and maybe love themselves a bit more. i especially like the suggestions about travel and self care.

  4. Hello, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. Valentine’s day is a time of love. You can either show love to your lover, or to members of your family, or even to yourself. I would really love to spoil myself at every given chance. I think going to see a movie is the best thing to do by myself

    1. Hey Benny! I love going to the movies! But lately, I feel there haven’t been that many movies released on the big screen to get me excited. A lot of the good ones I think are on streaming nowadays!…..Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
